Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction, also known as ‘breast reduction mammoplasty’ when focusing on female breast reduction, is the plastic surgery procedure used to reduce the size of large breasts. It does so by removing excess fat and skin from the breasts which then makes them smaller, better shaped, and more ‘up-lifted’.

Male breast reduction is called ‘gynaecomastia’; please click here to find out more about this procedure.

A woman’s breast size is determined by factors such as:

  • Hormones
  • Genes
  • Weight
  • Body Frame
  • The size of the breasts are proportionate to the body in most women, but there are
  • some women who suffer with breasts that appear and feel much larger in proportion
  • to the body.

When should you consider a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is an excellent procedure to reduce the size and improve the shape of the breast, giving a more youthful appearance.

Breast reduction is an option that is worth considering for patients that are unhappy with the shape, size, weight etc of their breasts. You may feel that your breasts are asymmetrical; you might worry that your breasts are just ‘too large’ in general; you may seek surgery not just for aesthetic reasons but also for health reasons – very  large breasts can become unbelievably heavy, this causing neck and back pain, which can make it very hard to find comfortable positions in which to sleep, and can affect your breathing.

London and Liverpool surgeon Mr Hassan Shaaban is board certified, very well regarded and highly experienced surgeon in performing breast reduction procedures.

CONSULTATION

The first choice that you need to make once you have researched breast reduction, is that of your surgeon. It is very important that you consult with a professional and reputable surgeon.

The initial consultation with Mr Hassan Shaaban will take approximately one hour at Phi Clinic in Harley Street, London. If you would prefer to see Mr Shaaban in Liverpool, this is something that can be arranged by his team.

During the first consultation, patients undergo a full examination and assessment. This assessment is to help Mr Shaaban to determine if this is the right procedure for you. Mr Shaaban will explain breast reduction to you in full detail, including the benefits, risks and possible side effects.

Mr Shaaban will also evaluate your expectations during the initial consultation in Harley Street. It is important that you are open and honest with your surgeon at all times during your consultations, as your lifestyle and expectations will help to determine how well suited you are for a breast reduction.

Should you decide to proceed with the breast reduction with Mr Hassan Shaaban, you will be invited back to see him for a second consultation nearer to the date of you surgery.

THE PROCEDURE

What happens during a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction procedures are performed under general anesthetic which involves a 1 night stay in hospital, and can take anywhere between 1.5 to 4 hours. Sometimes a very small reduction procedure can be performed under local anesthetic with sedation.

During the breast reduction procedure, Mr Hassan Shaaban will remove glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts. These techniques will make them smaller, lighter, and significantly firmer.

Sometimes during a breast reduction procedure, Mr Shaaban will also reduce the size of the areola, and all types of breast reduction will result in a scar around the areola (the dark area around the nipple). This is because the breasts are reshaped and the nipples are re-positioned after the removal of skin, fat and glandular tissue.

What are the sides effects of Breast Reduction?

There are, of course, some possible side effects that can occur after breast reduction, as there is with any form of plastic and cosmetic surgery.

The possible side effects are:

  • Temporary soreness and swelling
  • Change in nipple sensation
  • Nipple and Fat Necrosis (this is very, very rare)
  • Breasts sensitive to stimulation
  • Inability to breast feed
  • Scarring

What are the risks involved with Breast Reduction?

Again, every cosmetic procedure carries some uncertainty and risks. These are greatly minimised in the hands of a capable surgeon such as Mr Hassan Shaaban.

The most common problems risks are:

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Increase or decrease in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin (which very occasionally can be permanent)
  • Scars can occasionally be prominent or excessive

RECOVERY

Mr Hassan Shaaban will probably ask you to make some lifestyle changes before surgery to prepare properly for your operation. This is likely to involve some alterations post-surgery, too.

The aftercare period is something that Mr Shaaban would stress is very important. You will be given post-operative pain killers and instructions regarding your dressings and stitches. Even with all of this information, it is imperative that you go steady and recover at your own pace; everyone heals differently.
