Facelift

The overall aim of a face lift procedure is to restore a more youthful look to the face by tightening it and making it appear smoother, via various techniques.

Over time, the skin around the face becomes wrinkled and sags due to age and so the people that consider this type of treatment wish to combat these signs of ageing for a cosmetic purpose. A facelift procedure is a very viable option if you feel you are in serious need of facial rejuvenation. A facelift procedure specifically tightens skin around the face and neck, combating wrinkles and sagging skin that have appeared as a result of ageing and weight loss.

As we age, the effects of gravity will take their toll; exposure to the sun, and the day-to-day stresses of life can cause obvious ageing in the face and neck. You may notice that deep creases form between the nose and mouth; your jaw line may grow slack and jowly; and folds and fat deposits tend to appear around the neck. It is important to understand that a facelift procedure won’t stop the ageing process, but it can ‘turn back time’ and provide a far more youthful appearance. There are various types of facelift that can be performed alone, or in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a rhinoplasty (nose job), blepharopasty (eyelid surgery), and a forehead lift. Choosing a facelift procedure will improve the most obvious signs of ageing. It does so by removing excess fat, re-draping the skin of your face and neck, and tightening any under-lying muscles.

Mr Hassan Shaaban is highly experienced plastic surgeon with many years’ experience in performing facelift surgery. Mr Shaaban consults from PHI Clinic in Harley Street, London, but also sees patients in Liverpool.

CONSULTATION

Prior to your operation you will first meet with Mr Shaaban, usually in Harley Street, London, to discuss your needs and desires (as you would with any surgical procedure). During your consultation, Mr Shaaban will assess your suitability for a facelift based on your health and lifestyle and so it is important that you are both open and honest. Choosing a well-respected surgeon such as Mr Shaaban at PHI Clinic ensures that you are well looked after in terms of his reputation, the highest levels of care that you will receive, and the best possible treatment in a top-quality setting.

Throughout your consultation process you will discuss a treatment tailored to your desired outcome, depending on the area of your face that you’d like to alter. There are different types of facelift, such as the ‘mini facelift’ which is a bit simpler than a ‘full facelift’ and might be more suitable depending on your requirements.

Mr Hassan Shaaban will explain all of the facelift procedure options, and after a full examination, will advise you on which is the best suited procedure and treatment for you.

The best candidate for a facelift is a patient who has begun the ageing process; their face and neck have begun to sag, but their skin still has some elasticity. A facelift is also suited to a patient who has a strong bone structure. The typical age of a patient undergoing a facelift would be between 40-60 years old, but it is possible to perform successful facelift procedures on older patients, too.

A facelift will make you look more youthful, but it is imperative that you discuss your expectations thoroughly with Mr Shaaban pre-facelift, to ensure that they are realistic and that you are choosing the best procedure for your individual needs.

THE PROCEDURE

Mr Shaaban may ask you to alter aspects of your lifestyle in order to prepare you for surgery. For example, you may be asked to stop eating and drinking a few hours prior to your procedure, or to stop taking certain medication as they may increases the chances of bleeding.

The operation itself is usually performed under a general anesthetic and takes between 1.5 and 4 hours, depending on what type of facelift you are having. Again, depending on your type of treatment, incisions will be made around your face in order to remove/re-position skin and excess fat, tighten muscles and tissues before then closing these incisions using stitches.

You can usually expect to stay overnight in hospital after a facelift procedure.

There are always risks that come with surgical procedures and so it is advisable that you are aware of these and consider them before making the life-changing decision to receive this type of treatment. These could include infection, numbness, a raised hairline, swelling etc but are uncommon, providing you consult with a reputable surgeon such as Mr Shaaban. In the hands of a competent surgeon, the risks are significantly minimised.

RECOVERY

Mr Hassan Shaaban will always ensure that aftercare is discussed with you in detail; sometimes it could involve tending to wounds, treating any pains, bandaging to the face for a short period etc.

Depending on what kind of facelift procedure you choose, your recovery time may vary. You can expect to be back at work within 14 days, and bruising should fade within 1-2 weeks. Please don’t part-take in any physical activity of the upper-body before 3-4 weeks have passed post-procedure; the lower-body can sometimes be exercised within 2-3 weeks. The fading of a patient’s scars is the longest part of the recovery process, which can take weeks to months.
